Ahhh, the smell of fresh laundry! I have wanted to make my own laundry detergent for a couple years now and I finally did it! I am so excited because I am saving tons of $$ and no more toxic chemicals in our clothes and on our skin. I am working on becoming more green! This recipe is Aunt Jenny's over at MaryJane's Farm which I am a member. I am Farmgirl Sister #44! I have learned so much from MaryJane Butters and all the farmgirls! MaryJane is a True Blue Farmgirl and has taught me how to crochet through one of her many books! I have all her books & magazines and cherish each one. Check out her website! I know you will enjoy your visit~
UPDATE! You gals have asked and *YES I LOVE the detergent and will never go back to store bought!
*Yes, it works well in hard water.
*White vinegar for the rinse cycle & NO your clothes will not smell like vinegar. Promise!
*You can find washing soda in the laundry section.
**HE front loader machines, dissolve 1 to 2 tbs. of detergent to hot water to make a liquid, then add to machine.
It works!
*Store in a 2 gallon airtight container

Thank you so much for this recipe! I made it today.I used Ivory-searched every store in our little town for the Fels but there was none to be found. I also added essential oil in Tangerine to mine-probably 20 drops or more cuz I love the scent! I'm on my second load. I started with my sons bedding and you know how nasty little boys can be..lol. His sheets smell wonderful now! I encourage everyone to try this. I know we will be saving a lot of $$$ with this recipe.
I bought this cute clothespin holder from Aunt Jenny's Etsy Store
Aunt Jenny's recipe is wonderful. It should last me several months and cost just a few cents a load! I bought all my supplies at WinCo.

*You can also use Ivory, Castile, Zote or another bar soap.
~
3 bars Fels Naptha Bar Soap
4 lbs. Borax
4 lbs. Arm & Hammer Washing Soda
4 lbs. Arm & Hammer Baking Soda
Mix and store in airtight container.
1 to 2 tablespoons per load.
I made the laundry detergent in my laundry room!
REMEMBER it makes NO SUDS but cleans super!
You can grate the soap by hand but it was much easier using my KitchenAid attachment!
Sure looks like cheese but smells a lot better!

It has a nice fresh smell like a cool breeze.
I no longer use fabric softener. I add 1/2 cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle to soften fabric, brighten whites and eliminate cling. No vinegar smell left on clothes! Honest, it works!
I think my Grandmother's would be proud of me!
Now off to do some laundry.

Oh honey, I need to add something to my "Honey Do List"...
